High school students participating in the Upward Bound program at Rogers State University will partner with a Tulsa non-profit organization to help restore a home in need of repair on Friday.
RSU Upward Bound students will assist volunteers from Rebuilding Tulsa Together in cleaning and painting a home at 1165 N. Cheyenne in Tulsa as part of their summer service learning project. The students will work from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“This project will help our students gain an awareness of the needs of those around them, as well as hands-on experience on how to help meet those needs,” said Corinice Wilson, RSU Executive Director of TRIO Programs.
Upward Bound is a six-week summer program at RSU for area high school students who are from low-income households or households where neither parent has a post-secondary education. The goal of the federally funded program is to help students graduate from high school and prepare to enroll in college. The program helps students strengthen their academic skills, develop career plans and gain social and cultural awareness through field trips and service learning projects.
RSU has served more than 1,000 high school students from northeast Oklahoma through its Upward Bound program since 1980. RSU also hosts other federal TRIO programs including the Educational Opportunity Center and Educational Talent Search. For more information on the programs, call (918) 343-7761.
Rebuilding Together is a nationwide volunteer organization that preserves and revitalizes low income homes and communities. The Tulsa branch of the organization has made more than 2,000 repairs to 466 homes, working with low-income, aging or disabled residents since its inception 11 years ago.
