Dr. Thomas Carment, professor of accounting and O.D. Mayor Endowed Chair at Rogers State University in Pryor, was named the 2012 Outstanding Accounting Educator by the Oklahoma Society of Certified Public Accountants.
The award was presented at the annual Oklahoma Accounting Educators Conference in Stillwater earlier this month. He was awarded a commemorative plaque and a scholarship from the OSCPA to award to an RSU accounting student of his choice.
The scholarship was presented to Ashley Simpson of Skiatook, who will graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Simpson, who also participated in RSU’s co-op program with ConocoPhilips and previously earned an associate degree from Tulsa Community College, will apply the scholarship to her pursuit of an MBA from Oklahoma State University.
“I am very honored Dr. Carment nominated me,” Simpson said. “It is rewarding to be recognized for the time, effort and hard work I put toward my degree.”
The Outstanding Accounting Educator award was established by the Liaisons with Educational Institutions to recognize teaching excellence.
Carment has a background in financial and managerial accounting, and research interests in capital markets and financial reporting. He previously served on the faculty of the School of Business and Technology at the RSU campus in Claremore and also has served on the faculties of Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma State University, and the University of Hawaii. He received his doctorate in business administration from OSU and is a Certified Public Accountant. Prior to teaching, he was employed by Ford Motor Company, Burroughs Corporation and Conoco.
Professionally, Carment is the Program Chair-Elect, Southwest Region, for the American Accounting Association. He is a member of the Association of Government Accountants, the Institute of Management Accountants and the Oklahoma Society of CPAs, where he is involved in the Eastern Chapter. Carment also is a member of the Accounting Program and the Workforce Development Advisory Committees for Tulsa Community College.
Additionally, Carment was a member of two committees that developed curriculum for an MBA program and a social entrepreneurship degree at Rogers State University. The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education approved the two programs in February 2012.
