Severe weather in the Claremore area shortened the Hillcats baseball game with St. Gregory’s to just five innings at the Hillcat Complex on Monday as Rogers State claimed the victory, 3-2.
RSU broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run fourth inning. Zack Bacon laced a single to left to start the inning and Todd Koscheski followed with a walk. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch before Travis Harold delivered with an RBI groundout to give the Hillcats a 2-1 advantage. Andrew Sherman added a sacrifice fly to push the lead to two.
SGU answered with a run in the top of the fifth and had runners on first and second before Justin Anderson grounded out to end the threat. The game was halted in the top of the sixth due to lightning storms in the area. Since the teams had completed five innings, the game was official and the Hillcats were credited with the win.
Freshman Creston Moon (3-3) pitched all five innings for RSU, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out three. Chris Boyd suffered the loss for the Cavaliers.
Coach Ron Bradley’s team improved to 27-22 with the victory and extended its winning streak to four games. The Hillcats will close out the season on the road this weekend with a doubleheader at Newman (Wichita, Kan.) University on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
