Two Rogers State University communications students have won prestigious scholarships from two Oklahoma chapters of the Association of Women in Communication.
Heather Crain of Broken Arrow and Amanda McFarland of Verdigris will each be awarded with a $1,000 scholarship from the AWC at annual award ceremonies for the Tulsa and Oklahoma City chapters respectively.
Crain, a corporate communications senior, has won the “AWC Rising Star Communicator” scholarship for the second year in a row. She received the $1,000 scholarship last year from the Oklahoma City chapter, and she will receive the same award from the Tulsa Professional Chapter during its 40th Annual Newsmakers Luncheon on May 9 at Southern Hills Country Club.
Crain has interned with Camp Fire Green Country, volunteered at Tulsa County Conservation District for almost a decade and has received the district’s Volunteer of the Year Award. In the past she served on the board of directors for Camp Fire USA for two years and the national youth advisory cabinet for four years. She is currently in charge of the women’s ministry at the Baptist Collegiate Ministries and has tutored students in video production for two years.
McFarland, a radio/television communications senior, received a $1,000 scholarship at the Oklahoma City chapter’s Annual Bosses Breakfast on April 18 at the Waterford Marriott in Oklahoma City.
McFarland is a member of the Student Broadcast Association, student worker at RSU Public TV, was an assistant producer for the independent film “Playground of the Native Son,” is production assistant for Church on the Move and will coordinate that 2013 RSU Student Film Festival this fall.
