Rogers State University this spring will be offering an Emergency Medical Technician course in Pryor that will provide students with training needed to earn an EMT license.
Following the 16-week course, students will be prepared for EMT certification, which makes students more marketable for medical and emergency careers, said Clem Ohman, assistant professor and coordinator of RSU’s Emergency Medical Services program.
The EMT course will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-10 p.m. beginning on Jan. 11 at the RSU Pryor campus, located at 2155 Highway 69A in the MidAmerica Industrial Park.
Successful graduates are finding a growing demand for certified EMTs for ambulance services, fire departments, hospital and emergency rooms, and law enforcement agencies. In fact, many fire departments now require prospective candidates to be EMT certified as a condition of employment.
Completing the course may also provide a leg up for students looking to enter medical school because it demonstrates a base level of medical experience, Ohman said.
“EMTs often are the first on the scene of emergency situations requiring immediate medical attention. Lives depend on the quick reaction and competent care provided by these well-trained professionals,” Ohman said. “It’s a tremendously rewarding field, and we’re excited that we’ll be offering these classes for Mayes County area residents.”
