Animation Career Review determined school rankings based on several qualities, including academic reputation, depth and breadth of the program, value as it relates to tuition and indebtedness, geographic location and employment data. Other Oklahoma schools ranked in the report were the University of Tulsa and Oklahoma Christian University.

RSU began its game development curriculum in 2006 and was one of the first schools in Oklahoma to offer this unique focus. RSU offers a bachelor’s degree in information technology with a game development option, which is available online.

RSU’s game development option is designed to provide students with the highest possible quality education in the areas of game development and general education. The program blends skills in art, computer science, mathematics, physics, and writing to provide graduates with the opportunity to pursue a career in the area of computer game development including possible careers in game development for entertainment, training, and education. Graduates will also possess skills that will enable them to pursue other career paths such as multimedia artistry and animation, computer programming, and software engineering.

As a complement to the game development program, RSU in 2018 became the first Oklahoma university to offer esports, competitive video gaming, as an official university activity. RSU’s esports teams have competed against some of the biggest schools in the region in competition. This fall, RSU expects to offer scholarships to its top esports team members.

Starting this fall, the university will be offering an esports minor for those students who want to further explore this rapidly emerging field. RSU is one of four universities in the nation, and the only one in Oklahoma, with an esports academic program.

RSU also is finalizing approval to offer bachelor’s degree options in esports, as well as a degree option in unmanned aircraft systems, pending review by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education.
