Psi Chi was founded in 1929 at Yale University. The organization’s stated purpose is “to encourage, stimulate and maintain excellence in scholarship, and to advance the science of psychology.” Many of the society’s members have gone on to distinguished careers in psychology.

Psi Chi is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and is an affiliate of both the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society. The organization has grown into one of the largest honor societies in the world with more than 1,000 chapters at colleges and universities across the U.S. Chapters recognize academic achievement by granting membership in the society, sponsor programs and activities that enhance the regular curriculum, and provide practical experience in the field.
