“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” a film based on the graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O’Malley, will be presented on Thursday, April 14, at Rogers State University.
The film, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. in the Will Rogers Auditorium on the RSU campus in Claremore.
The screening is part of the RSU Fine Arts Film Series, sponsored by the RSU School of Liberal Arts.
“This film is an experimental hybrid of the graphic novel, video game graphics, rock and roll, and a time-honored traditional hero’s tale. Edgar Wright has combined all of these elements into a seamless, visually stunning work of art,” said Denny Schmickle, RSU assistant professor.
O’Malley wrote six graphic novels, released from 2004 to 2010 by Portland, Ore.-based independent comic book publisher Oni Press. The series of novels focuses on the 23-year-old Canadian Scott Pilgrim, a slacker and part-time musician who lives in Toronto and plays bass guitar in a band. Pilgrim falls in love with American delivery girl Ramona Flowers, but in order to date her, he must defeat her seven evil ex-boyfriends, including an infamous skateboarder, a vegan rock star and identical twins.
The film adaptation of the series, released in 2010, stars Michael Cera in the title role. The film was directed by Edgar Wright, who also worked on the cult films “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz.”
A video game of the same name was developed by Ubisoft for PlayStation network and Xbox Live Arcade, also in 2010.
