Rogers State University Collegiate Officer Program (COP) and Criminal Justice Society (CJS) students recently volunteered to assist the Rogers County Sheriff’s Office with an active shooter training exercise.

Held March 20 at Sequoyah Middle School north of Claremore, the Response to Active Shooter Training was a simulation of an active shooter situation to help prepare Rogers County law officers on how to handle such a situation in the field.

RSU student participants included Amanda Haus of Sand Springs, Madelin “Jade” Lewis of Bartlesville, and Tyler Saenz of Skiatook.

RCSO Captain Bronson Smith oversaw operations and expressed his appreciation for the RSU students’ exercise participation, noting they were the “best actors” he’d seen in such an exercise, and said all were welcome to return for similar and other training exercises in the future.

RSU’s COP Program is a combination of college classes and police training skills which leads to the eligibility for police officer certification. Graduates will earn an Associate of Arts in criminal justice studies with a COP option.

Rogers State University’s Criminal Justic Society is a student group which promotes academic excellence to make the criminal justice system and its practitioners more ethical and effective. CJS promotes critical thinking, and rigorous scholarship; keeps abreast of the advances in scientific research to elevate the ethical standards of criminal justice professions; and sustains in the public mind the benefit and necessity of education and professional training.
