A new monthly student newspaper titled Hillpost will be published beginning in August at Rogers State University.
An announcement of the student-produced newspaper and unveiling of its name was held on Monday, Aug. 3, at the university.
“This is the first time RSU has had an independent student newspaper on its campus in recent history,” said RSU President Dr. Larry Rice. “A student newspaper is an important and integral part of campus life and we are pleased to have the new Hillpost on campus.”
In the past, various student publications were published by Claremore Junior College and the Oklahoma Military Academy, the university’s predecessor institutions, but a student newspaper has not existed at RSU since it was accredited as a four-year university in 2000.
The new publication will be produced by the RSU Student Newspaper Organization (SNO), a student organization formed last spring.
“Members of the Student Newspaper Organization will be responsible for all aspects of production, including conceptualization of articles, interviewing, writing and design,” said Dr. Mary Mackie, associate professor of English, who will serve as faculty advisor for the newspaper. “Students will conduct all planning and make all editorial decisions with the guidance of their advisor and other faculty members as needed.”
Hillpost will be printed by the Claremore Daily Progress and distributed on each RSU campus in Claremore, Bartlesville and Pryor on the fourth Monday of each month. In addition, the Progress will insert the newspaper into its regular editions, allowing members of the community who purchase or subscribe to the Progress to read the new publication.
“The Progress is gratified to be able to assist the university with this important project,” said Bailey Dabney, publisher of the Claremore Daily Progress. “Nurturing a student newspaper project such as this is part of the educational mission and community outreach of our local daily newspaper.”
Advertising in the newspaper will be coordinated by advertising sales staff at the Claremore Daily Progress and queries may be directed to 341-1101.
The editorial staff of the newspaper includes Zachary Stoycoff of Claremore, editor; Jeanice Davis of Claremore, assistant editor; Bekah Warren of Claremore, features editor; and Tip Crowley of Tulsa, entertainment editor. Several contributing staff writers also will work for the newspaper.
The Hillpost office is located in Room 202 of Downs Hall on the RSU campus in Claremore.
Hillpost will feature news occurring on the RSU campus and surrounding communities, RSU sports and features about student and faculty accomplishments. The newspaper also will feature a master calendar listing all university events, including events sponsored by student organizations.
The first issue will feature stories about the 100th anniversary of the first day of classes at the institution on Sept. 14, the university’s new Higher One refund cards, trips taken by RSU students over the summer, the upcoming RSU Theatre season and more.
