OMA Alumni Holding Flag-Raising Ceremony to Celebrate 100th Anniversary

OMA-FlagRaisingCeremonyThe Oklahoma Military Academy Alumni Association will be holding a Feb. 28 flag-raising ceremony to celebrate the 100th anniversary of OMA’s founding.

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of OMA, the OMA Alumni Association has created a special centennial flag that will fly over the campus during the year.

The flag will be unveiled to the public during the ceremony to be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, at the flag pole at RSU’s entrance off Will Rogers Blvd.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony, which is scheduled to include brief remarks from retired Maj. Gen. Mike Kuehr, OMA Class of ’68 and adjutant for the upcoming OMA reunion; RSU President Dr. Larry Rice; and Claremore City Manager Jim Thomas. The flag raising will be conducted by members of the RSU Guard Officer Leadership Development (GOLD) Program, OMA Alumni President Randy Vierling (Class of ’63), and OMA Alumni Association board members James Morrison (Class of ’52) and David Morgan (Class of ’46).

The Oklahoma Military Academy operated in Claremore from 1919 to 1971, when the school transitioned to a community college and later became the regional university now known as RSU. A widely respected military high school and junior college, OMA was recognized as “The West Point of the Southwest” with more than 10,000 men and women attending the school during its distinguished history.

The OMA Alumni Association was formed to preserve the school’s legacy. OMA Alumni have been instrumental in providing support to RSU, including both scholarships and development of the Claremore campus. The OMA Alumni Association holds an annual reunion each summer on the RSU campus with this year’s event scheduled for June 7-8.
