Dr. Davis D. Joyce will discuss his autobiographical collection of essays, “Recollections of a Hitherto Truthful Man,” at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 7, at the Rogers State University Baird Hall Performance Studio.
A reception and book signing will follow the event, which is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided. The event is sponsored by the Stratton Taylor Library and the Department of History and Political Science.
A longtime Oklahoma college educator, Joyce has taught history at the University of Tulsa, East Central University and RSU, where he was an adjunct faculty member until last year. He is the author, co-author, or editor, of twelve books, including “Howard Zinn: A Radical American Vision,” “An Oklahoma I Had Never Seen Before” and “Alternative Oklahoma.”
Joyce’s latest book is an autobiographical look at his life and it has received rave reviews from the literary community. “These beautifully conceived and sculpted essays reveal a deep humanity and extensive knowledge. Weaving together local, national, world, and even ancient histories with personal stories, Joyce dips deeply into politics, religion, love for his adopted home of Oklahoma, and throughout, a thread of tribute to the great Howard Zinn,” said Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, author of “Red Dirt: Growing Up Okie.”
Dr. Joyce was born in Greenwood, Ark., and earned his bachelor’s degree from Eastern New Mexico University, master’s degree from New Mexico State University and doctorate degree from the University of Oklahoma.
Joyce and his wife Carole are now retired and live at Lake Spavinaw, Okla.
