Getting to Know RSU’s Academic Advisors: Tanner Ray

Whether it’s on land or on the water, Tanner Ray is a fisherman at heart.

When he was still a student, Tanner was an active member of RSU’s Bass Fishing Team, even taking home second place honors at the 2023 Oklahoma College Bass Championship with his then-partner Konner Holt.

In his new role as an academic advisor, Tanner may have set aside his actual fishing pole – for the moment – but he’s picked up a metaphorical one to attract, assist, and guide RSU students through their own educational journeys.

“My favorite thing about my job is interacting with people and helping the students with their college classes,” Ray said. “As a former RSU student, I have a lot of great memories of my time here, but my favorite would be working Big Tent Day with my fishing buddies and talking to people about fishing.”

When he’s not helping students on the Hill, he enjoys baking, playing video games, building Legos, and hanging out with his wife, April, whom he married earlier this year.

And fishing, of course.

Originally from Owasso, Ray later moved to Broken Arrow, where he and his wife share two dogs, a Corgi and a Pitbull mix.

RSU’s academic advisors help guide students through their educational journey, ensuring they’re on track to earn the degree they want and working with them to overcome the challenges they encounter.

Advisors can assist students with enrollment, major and minor curriculum details, and other related academic issues.

RSU students may schedule an advising appointment with their academic advisor to enroll in courses.
