Rogers State University has been named one of the top 15 schools for game design and development in the southwest United States by a leading website devoted to animation and game design professionals.
Animation Career Review ranked RSU 12th among schools in its southwest region, and RSU was the only Oklahoma university included in the ranking. The website recognized that RSU game development graduates go on to work at major companies in the region, thanks to RSU’s internship and co-op programs.
Denver Poteet, a 2012 RSU game development graduate, is one of those students earning a living with his degree. Poteet has been creating mobile games for F5 Games in Tulsa since he graduated from RSU.
“So many people are shocked when I tell them I have an actual degree in video game development. They can’t believe that the degree is offered at RSU,” Poteet said. “RSU equipped me with the skills I needed for the future I wanted.”
The Bachelor of Science in Game Development is designed to provide students with the highest possible quality education in the areas of game development and general education. It is an multidisciplinary degree blending skills in art, computer science, mathematics, physics, and writing.
These skills provide graduates with the opportunity to pursue a career in the area of computer game development, including possible careers in game development for entertainment, training and education. The program also develops skills for students so they may pursue other career paths, such as multimedia artistry and animation, computer programming and software engineering.
“Students aren’t just learning how to make computer video games. They can also respond to the rapidly changing job market for information technology professionals and contribute to the Oklahoma economy through the development of animated video and business simulation games,” said Dr. Bruce Garrison, Dean of RSU’s School of Business and Technology. “Students leave here with a degree that is in demand.”
The program is academically rigorous, including admission requirements for a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) high school GPA and a composite score of 25 on the ACT to be admitted to the major. For more information call 918-343-7520.
