The seventh annual JamBand concert at Rogers State University on Thursday, April 26, will feature five bands for $5.
The concert, presented by RSU Radio and the RSU chapter of the Student Broadcasting Association (SBA), will begin at 7 p.m. in the Will Rogers Auditorium on the RSU campus in Claremore (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) Tickets will be available at the door.
The host of the event will be Misti Grannemann, RSU student, RSU Radio programming director and president of the SBA. She also is the host of the “Josh and Misti in the Morning” show on RSU Radio.
“The JamBand concert has become a tradition at RSU and our students are really excited about this year’s line-up and special guests,” Grannemann said.
This year’s guest host will be Davit Souders, who is host of “Local Flavors” and “That 70s Show” on RSU Radio. Souders recently was voted one of the “Hot 100 Movers and Shakers” by Urban Tulsa magazine. He has worked in broadcasting for 17 years and is the owner of Diabolical Productions of Tulsa. He also is the program director and host of iROK Radio, which features musicians from Oklahoma. In addition, he is serving as festival coordinator for D-Fest, a two-day music conference and festival in Tulsa featuring independent artists from across the country.
Bands playing at JamBand VII include Crooked X, Rook, The Effects, Stevedore and Motive for Movement.
Crooked X is a band of 13-year-old musicians from Coweta who have a Metallica-inspired sound and a stage show of seasoned rockers. The group has performed more than 85 times in two years, including appearances on “The CBS Morning Show” and concerts at the historic Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa.
Rook, based inTulsa, began as a garage metal band, has a violin as a featured instrument and features two female vocalists. They have performed for five years across the Midwest.
The Effects have toured independently for the last two years all over the U.S. and Canada, including an appearance at the South by Southwest in Austin, the world’s largest music conference and festival.
Stevedore is an energetic trio from Tulsa that takes the sounds of early 1980s electronic dance music and makes it their own with a high energy stage show. They were one of the highlighted performers at Mayfest in Tulsa in 2006.
Motive for Movement formed out of the ashes of the Tulsa area Indie band Mellofront. Their songs reflect more post hardcore and their sound is much more
experimental and darker at times but they are still writing and going in all directions.
Each year, the SBA donates proceeds from the concert to a non-profit agency or charitable cause in Rogers County. This year, the group will utilize the proceeds to purchase an electronic message board for the new Students Services Center, which is scheduled to open in fall 2008 on the Claremore campus.
“The electronic message board will be used to inform students, faculty and staff about upcoming events, games and school closings, and other campus-related activities,” said Cathy Coomer, SBA adviser and general manager of RSU Radio.
In addition, proceeds from the concert will help SBA send its members to state workshops and conferences, she said.
