Dr. Richard Beck, a Texas administrator and former music professor, has been named vice president for academic affairs at Rogers State University.
The appointment was approved Thursday by RSU’s governing board, the University of Oklahoma Board of Regents.
Currently, Dr. Beck is in his seventh year as associate vice president for academic and student affairs at Angelo State University, a regional university with 6,250 students in San Angelo, Texas. Previously, he served as music professor, chair of the Department of Music and Drama and director of the Teaching and Learning Center at Del Mar College, a community college with 11,000 students in Corpus Christi, Texas.
“Dr. Beck has a wealth of experience in academic affairs as well as administrative functions such as enrollment and distance education, which will be particularly well-suited to RSU,” said Dr. Larry Rice, RSU President Designate.
At Angelo State, Dr. Beck is responsible for the university’s recruitment and retention efforts through the Center for Academic Excellence, which includes academic advising, career development, supplemental instruction, transitional services and university studies. He also has responsibility for enrollment management, including admissions, financial aid and the registrar. In addition, he has administrative oversight of the ASU continuing education and distance education programs.
His administrative duties also include curriculum approval, development of academic budget priorities and oversight of catalog development and commencement ceremonies. He participated in campus-wide planning via the Administrative Council and served on the Academic Deans’ Council, Council on Academic Affairs and Student Affairs and Council of Deans and Department Heads. He also was charged with monitoring the progress of the university’s academic master plan and providing updates to the academic community.
As chair of the Department of Music and Drama and interim head of the Department of Art and Music, he led more than 20 faculty members in each department, conducting performance evaluations, making recommendations for tenure and promotions and coordinating faculty development.
Dr. Beck received a Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Iowa, a Master of Music in Performance from the University of North Texas and a Bachelor of Applied Music from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point.
His teaching interests include applied horn, brass methods and music history and theory. His horn performance includes membership in the Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra. He has a large repertoire of solo, chamber and orchestral performances.
