RSU Workshops Aim For Small Business Success

Rogers State University’s Center for Economic and Community Development is hosting a series of small business workshops designed to assist area small businesses and entrepreneurs in developing successful enterprises.

The workshops are free and open to interested business owners, managers and entrepreneurs. Seating is limited and advance registration is required.

The workshops will be presented by state and area business specialists, as well as the Center for Economic and Community Development’s professional staff. All workshops will be held in room 205 in Herrington Hall on RSU’s Claremore campus, except as noted below.

The schedule includes:

  • Tips on Managing a Small Business, 1-4 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 9, presented by Lynn Wilson, business services coordinator with the Center for Economic and Community Development.
  • Seven Segments of a Successful Business Plan, 6-9 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 16, presented by Bob Price, business development specialist with the Center for Economic and Community Development.
  • Strategic Planning and Break-Even Analysis, 1-4 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 23, presented by Dr. Bert Tollison, RSU interim department head and associate professor for RSU’s Department of Business.
  • Small Business Innovative Research/Small Business Technology Transfer Proposal Workshop, Sept. 28-29, these all-day seminars presented by RSU and the Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology (OCAST). Representatives from Meridian Technology Center for Business Development will present a “hands-on,” classroom-style approach to writing a winning Phase I SBIR/STTR proposal. These sessions will be held in the President’s Room at the Stratton Taylor Library.
  • Legal Aspects of Small Business, 6-9 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 30, presented by attorney Jim Jenkins. This workshop will address issues including contracts, leases and business forms.
  • Legal Aspects of Human Resources, 6-9 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 7, presented by attorney Jim Jenkins. This workshop will address issues including harassment, discrimination, the American with Disabilities Act, Title VII, handbooks and appraisals.
  • Everything You Should Know About Taxes – State and Federal, 6-9 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 14, presented by Bob Fitzgerald, a CPA from Sand Springs.
  • How to Interest a Bank in Lending To Your Project, 6-9 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 26, presented by Myrtle Prather, vice-president of marketing for RCB Bank.
  • Getting the Government to Buy from You, 6-9 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 4, presented by Donna Martin, government development specialist with Northeast Technology Center.
  • Successful Marketing of Your Business, 6-9 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 18, presented by Dana Gray, adjunct professor with RSU’s Department of Business.
  • Understanding Financial Statements for Accounting Dummies, 6-9 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 2, presented by Bob Price, business development specialist with the Center for Economic and Community Development.
