RSU Students Win Six State Broadcasting Awards

Students from Rogers State University’s Department of Communications and Fine Arts won six awards in this year’s Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters/Oklahoma Broadcast Education Association Student Awards competition.

The awards were presented on March 31 during the OAB Convention in Oklahoma City.

This year, 17 Oklahoma universities, colleges and community colleges entered the competition with 243 total entries by students. Categories in radio and television include news, promotion, sports, commercials, public service and more. RSU students won six awards in the 12 categories they entered.

RSU students won awards in the following categories:

Radio magazine talk: Stephen Doyle, communications senior from Claremore, third place, “Rachael Sage Interview.”

Radio promotion: Doyle, first place, “RSU Radio Crazy Liner;” Sean Webster, communications senior from Tulsa, third place, “The Naked Shift” promotional spot.

Radio public service category: Doyle, first place, “RSU Hillcat Tryouts” announcement; and Webster, second place, “Red Cross O-Negative” announcement.

Radio sports play-by-play: Heath Poe, a communications senior from Broken Arrow, and Jim Scudder, a communications junior from Tulsa, third place, live broadcast of RSU baseball games.

The students were recognized during the Student Day program held in conjunction with the OAB Convention. The RSU communications students attended panel discussion on resume development and a session with state news directors regarding the professional attributes needed for successful broadcast careers.

Students were able to interact with Oklahoma broadcasting professionals working in the state, as well as attend a luncheon with David Rehr, president of the National Association of Broadcasters.
