RSU Radio To Broadcast Baseball Games

Rogers State University students will receive first-hand experience when they broadcast seven RSU baseball club games on RSU Radio.

The Department of Communications and Fine Arts and RSU Radio (91.3 FM, KRSC) are organizing the effort to have students produce, report and announce the live broadcast of seven home baseball contests this spring. Students from the university’s inaugural sports broadcasting course will be responsible for the broadcast and its programming, said Cathy Coomer, RSU instructor and RSU Radio general manager.

“I am not only excited about the opportunity to offer this type of programming to our listeners on KRSC, but also the chance to give our students this type of experience for those interested in the many facets of broadcasting,” she said. “I am enjoying working with baseball coach Ron Bradley very much and look forward to not only a good season but the future of additional sports programming on KRSC.”

The baseball club games to be broadcast on the station include the following games:

March 9, Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College at Oologah, 3:30 p.m.;
March 19, Southern Nazarene University at Claremore, 1 p.m. doubleheader;
March 24, Carl Albert State College at Oologah, 1 p.m. doubleheader;
March 30, Tabor College at Claremore, 2 p.m. doubleheader;
April 7, Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College at Pryor, 1 p.m. doubleheader;
April 21, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College at Owasso, 5 p.m.; and
April 26 against Northern Oklahoma College-Enid, Claremore, 4 p.m.

Students in the sports broadcasting course are preparing for the upcoming games by interviewing and developing biographies on each RSU player, as well as getting background information on the opposing schools and team rosters. In addition to the on-air roles of providing play-by-play and color announcing during the games, students also will be responsible for reporting and taping interviews for each game, field producing and serving as technical assistants for the productions.

The class will produce a pre-season baseball preview show to air at 5:30 p.m., March 7. An end-of-season review show will also be aired.

Coomer, who joined the RSU faculty in the fall, has extensive experience in sports broadcasting from her previous position at Pittsburg (Kan.) State University where she oversaw the broadcasting of all PSU football games, men and women’s home basketball games, and softball, baseball and volleyball games that were tape-delayed and aired on the school’s public access television channel.

Ryan Bradley, the sports director for the University of Arkansas’ student-run television station, will be assisting the on-air students to provide guidance and supervision for announcing the game. Bradley, who is the son of baseball club coach Ron Bradley, has experience working for a daily radio sports talk show syndicated in Arkansas.
