RSU Radio and Gary “Turbo” Webb Win ABOT Awards

RSU Radio on Tuesday won two top awards in Urban Tulsa Weekly’s annual Absolute Best of Tulsa contest, including Best Station for Music and Favorite Radio Personality.

RSU Radio was heralded as the reader’s choice for Best Radio Station for Music, beating out two big-name commercial competitors in 104.5 The Edge and 97.5 KMOD. The underdog win came as a surprise to Urban Tulsa staff members, who credited the station’s eclectic musical tastes for the victory.

“Sometimes the little guys can beat the big corporate stations at their own game by delivering something for everyone,” the paper noted in its annual publication about the awards.

Meanwhile, Urban Tulsa readers named RSU Radio Disc Jockey Gary “TuRbO” Webb Favorite Radio Personality. “If you want to know what’s really going on within the metal and hard rock scene, this is the man to listen to,” the paper said.

The win was the first ABoT award for Webb, an RSU senior from Verdigris who had also been nominated twice before. In 2012, he was named the national Specialty Music Director of the Year by the College Music Journal.

Urban Tulsa awards ABoT honors by popular vote of its readers. This is the first time RSU Radio or its personalities have been honored in the annual poll, despite two previous nominations.

“We are honored that our listeners appreciate the hard work our students put in to bring the best music and entertainment in the market,” said Cathy Coomer, general manager of RSU Radio. “We want to thank everyone for supporting us and a special thanks to those that voted for us.”
