RSU Prof To Present April 19 Book Review Examining U.S.’s First 21st Century Battle in Afghanistan

Dr. Abe Marrero, department head and assistant professor in Rogers State University’s Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, will review the book, “Not a Good Day to Die: The Untold Story of Operation Anaconda,” on Tuesday, April 19, at RSU’s Stratton Taylor Library.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Stratton Taylor Library, Room 207. The presentation is part of the university’s Library Literary Review series.

“Not a Good Day to Die,” written by award-winning Army Times senior writer Sean Naylor, details the failures of military intelligence and planning, and portrays the heroism of young, untested U.S. soldiers during the U.S.’s first major 21st century battle, which occurred in the Shahikot mountains of Afghanistan during the hunt for Osama bin Laden in  March 2002.

The book will be reviewed by Marrero, who received doctoral and master’s degrees in biological psychology from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City. He also received a master’s degree in biological sciences from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and a bachelor’s degree in biological science from Cameron University. He has made presentations at academic conferences across the nation and has written articles for several scholarly journals. He served as the mental health coordinator for the American Red Cross in the aftermath of the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. In addition, Marrero serves in the U.S. Army Reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel.
