RSU Jazz Band to Hold Public Auditions January 27

The new music program at Rogers State University will hold student and public auditions for its jazz band from 12-5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27. The auditions will be held in Baird Hall on the RSU campus in Claremore.

The new jazz band, the university’s first musical ensemble, will begin practicing from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday nights during the spring semester, according to Joseph Cernuto, RSU director of bands.

The jazz band, which will consist of 15 to 22 members, will feature a brass section with four trumpets and four trombones, a saxophone section with alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, and a rhythm section with drums, guitar, bass guitar and piano, a collection of instruments that is typical of jazz bands. Auditions will be held for each of those instruments.

The jazz band will give two public concerts later in the spring semester, Cernuto said. Performances will be held in the Will Rogers Auditorium on the RSU campus in Claremore, and at area public schools and other community venues in northeast Oklahoma.

Membership in the jazz band also will be opened to area high school students and community residents, as well as RSU students.
