Professional Experience

2004-2007,Executive Assistant to the President
The University of Tulsa, Tulsa, OK

  • Primary Responsibilities: Chief advisor to the President on issues directly and indirectly relating to the University. Provide effective and on-going communication to the President and his senior executive staff. Primary legislative and government relations liaison for the University. Key contact person with the University’s Board of Trustees.  Member of the University’s Crisis Management Team. Assist the President on special projects, including the coordination of the University’s significant community volunteer efforts and philanthropic outreach initiatives. Represent the President at legislative, community, and development functions. Coordinator of the elite Presidential Scholars Program and the nationally recognized Tulsa Undergraduate Research Challenge. Manage the development of briefing papers for the President’s meetings, speaking engagements, and development trips. Develop and improve management systems within the Office of the President. Supervise all staff in the Office of the President.

1991-2004, Oklahoma House of Representatives
District 8: Rogers, Mayes, and Wagoner Counties

  • Primary Responsibilities: Elected representative of the citizens of Oklahoma’s District 8, encompassing portions of Rogers County, Mayes County, and Wagoner County. Actively involved in promoting increased funding for the state’s higher education system. Served as Majority Floor Leader from 2002 to 2004; Chairman of the Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Committee from 1994 to 2002 (this committee later reorganized to include Public Utilities). Served as a member of the Administrative Rule Review Committee, the Banking and Finance Committee, the Commerce, Industry and Labor Committee, and the Economic Development Committee. Re-elected successfully following each term. Retired due to the statute governing term limits for State Representatives.

1991-2004,Director of Public Affairs
The University of Tulsa, Tulsa, OK

  • Primary Responsibilities: Chief public affairs and government relations officer; principal administrative liaison for interactions with local, state, and federal officials; managed internal and external strategic communications; developed programs designed to improve communication across University constituencies; represented the University to media outlets; actively involved in major fundraising activities including the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major donors; planned and executed Presidential travel for fundraising efforts; represented the University as a member of the joint facilities board (TU and The Nature Conservancy) of the Tall Grass Prairie Ecological Research Center; interfaced with local elected government officials and law enforcement as needed. Served as Interim Vice President of Institutional Advancement.

1997-1998, Interim Vice President of Institutional Advancement

  • Primary Responsibilities: Managed a professional development and fundraising organization at the state’s premiere private institution of higher education; successfully brought to a close the $108 million campus-wide capital campaign in 1998, exceeding the original goal of $85 million; directly supervised a staff of 30 in the areas of development, alumni relations, university relations, and donor services; managed and coordinated Presidential and development travel with all major gift officers and their respective units including the development of tailored donor/prospect solicitation strategies for individuals, corporations and foundations.

1986-1991, Associate Director of Academics, Pryor Campus
Rogers State College, Pryor, OK

  • Primary Responsibilities: Tasked with the set-up and development of a new full-service branch campus of Rogers State College; actively assisted in securing state funding for the construction of the Whitaker Education and Training Center in which all RSC classes would be housed and taught; established course schedule of credit and non-credit classes; oversaw facilities construction and provided regular and detailed progress reports to the President and Board of Regents of the College; developed a beneficial working relationship with the Oklahoma Military Department to offer classroom training at this facility; provided direct and expansive community outreach to Pryor and Mayes County.

1979-1986, Director, Applied Science Division
Rogers State College, Claremore, OK

  • Primary Responsibilities: Director of the Criminal Justice program and instructor of Criminal Justice; administrative officer for the Cooperative Education and Graduate Placement programs (a federally funded program); assistant to the Vice President for Continuing and Technical Education; primary liaison between Rogers State College and the Oklahoma Military Department.
