Questions You Can Ask Your Student

August

  • How has it been getting settled into your routine?
  • Did you get your campus email set up?
  • What are the add/drop dates for this semester?
  • So far, do you enjoy college life?
  • What are the big differences between high school and college academically?  Socially?  Personally?
  • Bonus: You made it through your first month.

September

  • Have you been using your planner?  Has it been helpful?
  • Is your job schedule working out with your class and study schedules?
  • Do you find it easy or difficult to go to class every day?  If difficult, how do you deal with that?
  • Are there other students you talk with before/after class?
  • In what ways are you learning about successfully managing your finances?
  • What is the last day to withdraw this semester?
  • Bonus:  Labor Day is this month….A day off.

October

  • What do you think the worst GPA scenario for this semester will be?
  • Do you know how to figure your GPA?
  • Are you figuring out how you, personally, study best?
  • How many mid-terms do you have coming up?
  • Are you checking your campus email every day?
  • When is your appointment with your advisor next semester?
  • Are you struggling at all with any of your classes?
  • How are you adjusting to having roommates?
  • Bonus:  Fall Break is this month…The semester is halfway over.

November

  • Are there any holds on your account you need to take care of before enrolling?
  • Have you enrolled for next semester?
  • What are your grades in each of your classes?
  • Have you checked into getting a flu shot at the Health Center?
  • Is there anyone you know (especially out-of-state students) who needs somewhere to go for Thanksgiving?
  • Bonus: Thanksgiving Break is this month….After that there are just a few weeks until the semester is complete.

December

  • Do you have any big projects or presentations due before the semester ends?
  • What do you think the worst GPA scenario for this semester will be?
  • How are you preparing for finals?       
  • What is your finals schedule?
  • What do you want for Christmas?
  • Bonus:  The semester is over this month…A few weeks of rest!

January

  • So far, how do you like your classes this semester?
  • What are the add/drop dates for this semester?
  • Did you already know anyone in your classes?
  • Have you met some new people?
  • How does starting this semester compare to starting last semester?
  • Bonus: Reunite with your friends.

February

  • Are you finding it easy or difficulty to attend class every day this semester?
  • Have you visited with any of your professors outside of class?
  • What is the last day to withdraw this semester?
  • Are there one or two organizations on campus you have become involved in?
  • How are you balancing your academic, social, and personal life?
  • Do you think you are fitting in well at RSU?
  • Is there anything you think you could be doing to increase your experience?
  • In what ways are you learning about successfully managing your finances?
  • Bonus: Basketball is in high gear so check out the games.

March

  • What are you thinking of doing over Spring Break?
  • What are your grades in each of your classes?
  • Are you finding it easy or difficulty to attend class every day?  If difficult, how are you handling that?
  • What do you think the worst GPA scenario for this semester will be?
  • How many mid-terms do you have coming up? 
  • Have you scheduled an appointment with your advisor about next semester?
  • Are you struggling at all with any of your classes?
  • Bonus: Spring Break is this month.      

April

  • Are there any holds on your account you need to take care of before enrolling?
  • Have you enrolled for next semester?
  • What are your grades in each of your classes?
  • With no breaks other than Spring Break this semester, how are you holding up?
  • What do you think the worst GPA scenario for this semester will be?
  • How are you preparing for finals?
  • Do you have any big projects or presentations due this month?
  • Bonus: Just one month of class left.

May

  • Are you planning to go watch graduation?
  • When are you planning to move back home, and do you need help?
  • Looking back over the past year, can you think of things you wish I had known to ask you about that would have been helpful?
  • Bonus: You made it through your first year!
