A Rogers State University junior from Coweta is one of 10 Oklahoma regional university students selected as a Brad Henry International Scholar for the 2013-14 academic year.

Leah Tecle, a social sciences/psychology major, will spend the spring 2014 semester continuing her studies at Swansea University in Wales. She is the sixth RSU student to be recognized as a Brad Henry International Scholar.

"I'm honored by my selection as a Brad Henry International Scholar, and I'm excited about the opportunity to study at Swansea and immerse myself in a different culture for an entire semester," she said.

The international study program, which was established by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education in June 2008, provides a $10,000 stipend for students to participate in a semester-long study abroad program affiliated with Swansea. Academic credit for these programs will be awarded by Oklahoma regional universities. Students are nominated for the program by their institutions.

"Serving as a Brad Henry International Scholar gives students the opportunity to gain new experiences and a practical understanding of today's global economy," said Chancellor Glen D. Johnson. "We congratulate each of these students for this honor and recognize the academic achievements and leadership skills that will make them outstanding representatives of our colleges and universities."

Tecle has participated in several study at-large opportunities through RSU, including a two-week intersession course in Scotland and Ireland last summer and a two-week program in Italy in May, both with Dr. James Ford, RSU professor of English and humanities.

"I love that I'm able to get a more worldly perspective through these study at-large programs, which helps provide me with a deeper understanding both of other cultures and our own," said Tecle, who also is a member of the RSU Honors Program.
