Global Population Expert To Give Free Public Lecture at RSU Oct. 19

Nationally known global population expert Werner Fornos will give a free public presentation on how world population growth impacts security, the environment and a variety of other social concerns on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at Rogers State University.

The event will be held at 11 a.m. in the Will Rogers Auditorium on the RSU campus in Claremore.

Fornos is president of the Population Institute, an independent, non-profit educational organization dedicated to maintaining a balance between the world's population, environment and resources. Established in 1969, the institute, with members in 160 countries, is headquartered in Washington, DC.

During the presentation, Fornos will discuss how the world's rapidly expanding population may affect global security and terrorism, the environment, health care and the rates of hunger, poverty and illiteracy in underdeveloped countries.

His visit to RSU is part of the Educate America Campaign, a series of visits to college and university campuses, sponsored by the Population Institute.

Fornos joined the Population Institute in 1978 and became its president in 1982. Prior to his affiliation with the institute, Fornos was assistant professor at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where he headed the university's Global Population Information Program.

Fornos also has served as a consultant on family planning programs in Tunisia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Turkey, Mexico, the Philippines, Indonesia, China, Sri Lanka and Kenya.

He was the special assistant to the U.S. Assistant Secretary of Labor for labor-management relations and Deputy Assistant Manpower Administrator. He also was a member of the Maryland Legislature.

He is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a degree in government and politics and is the author of the book "Gaining People, Losing Ground."
