All students in the Math Structures I course are required to do a minimum of 8 hours of tutoring at an elementary school. This is factored into their grade for the course. Beyond that however, the tutoring provides them the opportunity to put into practice some of the things we discuss in the course. It also helps prepare them for their future profession; almost all of the students taking the course are pursuing a degree in Elementary Education.

Because of our partnership with Claremont, our students are encouraged to do their tutoring there, and the majority of them do, while others tutor at elementary schools closer to their homes. While our students are able to apply what they are learning in class, the students at Claremont are benefiting from the tutoring. The feedback I received from the teachers there and at the other elementary schools was overwhelmingly positive. This is  true service learning for our students.

Testimonies

Tammy Cunningham – RSU Student, Spring 2012
My time at Claremont was very rewarding. The teachers and staff there were wonderful and extremely helpful. It was great to be with the kids and to help them with their current work or to help the ones who were struggling and watch their eyes light up when they finally understood. My thanks to Dr. Grenier and RSU for the Hillcub program.

Shelly Wells – RSU Student, Fall 2011
Thank you for this opportunity to be a part of the Hillcub Program. It was very enjoyable interacting with the students of Claremont Elementary and encouraging them in their endeavor to grow in their understanding of math. It was a refreshing experience beyond our classroom setting.

Cheryel Prebble – 4th grade Teacher and Department Head
The Fourth grade had seven tutors. They were all very professional and showed up on time each week. Our students looked forward to the time they were able to spend with them each week! The RSU tutors were able to give small group help to our students and assisted us on any math topic we were covering. Thank you so much for the opportunity!
