ESSAY TOPICS:
1)      All of these essay topics relate to information from your textbooks and/or the lectures.  In other words, the answers to all of these questions may be found in your textbooks and/or the lectures.
2)      Two of the following topics will comprise the essay section of your first exam.  You will be required to answer one of the two topics.
3)      Hints for studying:  examine your textbooks and your lecture notes for historical facts that will help you write about the topic or question.
4)      Always make an outline of your answer to each topic and memorize your outlines before your exam.
5)      What I expect on your first essay—
a.       Good grammar
b.      No contractions
c.       No vague words
d.      An introductory paragraph
e.       At least three paragraphs for the body of your essay
f.        A concluding paragraph
g.       The use of accurate historical facts to demonstrate that you know about the topic
h.       Your essay should be between 500 and 600 words—WARNING:  do not expect an excellent grade just because you have written between 500 and 600 words!  You must also meet my expectations as mentioned above.

 

 How did federal government policies toward Native Americans in the West evolve from the 1850s to 1890? How did these Native Americans react to these policies, and how were these Native Americans defeated by the U. S. military?
 

What were the factors that contributed to the growth of American industry in the late 1800s and early 1900s? Make sure that you discuss each factor in detail.
 

How and why did American attitudes change during the nineteenth century regarding leisure activities?  What forms of popular entertainment developed in the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century?
 

What were the societal changes, economic conditions, and grievances that resulted in an "agrarian revolt" in the late nineteenth century? What organizations did the farmers create during the revolt, and what were the results of the revolt of the farmers?
